WASHINGTON, D.C. –  The National Wildlife Refuge Association mourns the passing of former U.S. Secretary of the Department of the Interior Dirk Kempthorne, a dedicated public servant whose leadership helped advance the conservation and stewardship of America’s public lands and wildlife.

During his tenure as the 49th Secretary of the Interior from 2006 to 2009, Kempthorne championed collaborative conservation and worked to balance the protection of natural resources with responsible public use. His leadership reflected a deep appreciation for the role that America’s lands and waters play in sustaining wildlife, supporting local communities, and connecting people to the outdoors.

“Secretary Kempthorne brought a thoughtful and pragmatic approach to conservation at a time of both opportunity and challenges,” said The Honorable Lynn Scarlett, Board Chair of the National Wildlife Refuge Association and former Deputy Secretary of the Interior from 2005-2009. “He believed strongly in partnerships—across agencies, with states, and with communities—and understood that lasting conservation solutions depend on shared stewardship. It was a privilege to serve alongside him. His legacy will continue to inform the way we care for our nation’s natural heritage.”

The Refuge Association recognizes Kempthorne’s contributions to strengthening the foundation for conservation across the Department of the Interior, including the National Wildlife Refuge System. His commitment to public service and collaborative problem-solving leaves a lasting mark on the conservation community.

Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and all who were inspired by his leadership.
