WASHINGTON, D.C. – The National Wildlife Refuge Association applauds the U.S. Department of Interior and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for their announcement of more than $67 million in federal funding for wetland conservation projects and the National Wildlife Refuge System. The announcement includes $44.79 million in North American Wetlands Conservation Act funding, matched by more than $88.98 million in partner funds for 16 projects across 16 states, along with more than $22.6 million from the Migratory Bird Conservation Fund to conserve 5,254 acres on 3 national wildlife refuges across 3 states.
“This is the kind of conservation investment that leaves a lasting mark,” said Desirée Sorenson-Groves, President & CEO of the National Wildlife Refuge Association. “When we invest in wetlands and national wildlife refuges, we are investing in birds, healthy habitat, outdoor traditions, and the places people return to generation after generation. This funding will help protect important ecosystems, strengthen the Refuge System, and create more opportunities for people to hunt, fish, observe wildlife, and enjoy the outdoors.”
This funding will help conserve, restore, or enhance 190,457 acres of critical wetland and associated upland habitat for migratory birds and other wildlife. It will also expand public opportunities for hunting, fishing, wildlife observation, and other outdoor recreation, underscoring the value of wetlands and refuges for both wildlife and people.
The refuge funding will support habitat conservation at Moody National Wildlife Refuge in Texas, Rappahannock River Valley National Wildlife Refuge in Virginia, and Emiquon National Wildlife Refuge in Illinois through purchases from willing sellers. The Refuge Association is encouraged to see continued support for wetlands conservation and for the Refuge System, which plays such an important role in protecting habitat, welcoming visitors, and sustaining America’s wildlife.
