House Committee Moves Important Refuge System Bills

Today, the House Natural Resources Committee advanced two vitally important bills for the conservation and preservation of public lands, including the National Wildlife Refuge System.  These measures would provide much needed funding to address maintenance needs of the Refuge System and reauthorize a critically important land acquisition program, the Land and Water Conservation Fund.  Read our press release and a letter from the Refuge Association and 70 Friends Groups.

Red Tide, Algae Blooms and Impacts to our National Wildlife Refuges

Over the summer, the nation has seen devastating impacts to wildlife and people from algae blooms including red tide, with the most widely reported on occurring along the Gulf Coast of Florida. Photos of dead sea turtles, dolphins, sea birds and fish, and even a 26 foot long whale shark have been circulating on the news and on social media. The red tide in southwest Florida over the last is one of the worst on record, killing hundreds of thousands of animals, causing severe respiratory problems in humans, and impacting tourism.
