National Wildlife Refuge Association Celebrates Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge's UNESCO World Heritage Designation

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The National Wildlife Refuge Association celebrates the designation of Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognizing one of the world's most extraordinary wetlands and affirming its global ecological and cultural significance.

This historic designation honors the Okefenokee’s remarkable biodiversity, expansive freshwater wetlands, and enduring importance as one of North America’s most iconic natural landscapes. As one of the crown jewels of the National Wildlife Refuge System, Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge protects an irreplaceable ecosystem that supports wildlife, inspires visitors, and connects people to the natural heritage we all share.

"The designation of Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge as a UNESCO World Heritage Site is a well-deserved recognition of one of our planet's truly irreplaceable places," said Desirée Sorenson-Groves, President and CEO of the National Wildlife Refuge Association. "Our board had the privilege of meeting at the refuge recently, where we experienced firsthand its breathtaking beauty and unparalleled ecological significance. Seeing the Okefenokee for ourselves only strengthened our commitment to protecting this extraordinary landscape for future generations. We congratulate everyone whose dedication helped make this achievement possible."
The National Wildlife Refuge Association has long been a member of the Okefenokee Protection Alliance, working alongside partners to support the refuge's World Heritage nomination and advocate for the long-term protection of this globally significant ecosystem.
