14 Refuges: Billy Frank Jr. Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge

“The refuge gets a lot of visitors for a few reasons. For one, they are located between two major cities and at the southern end of the Puget Sound. That’s a lot of traffic. And the people of the Pacific Northwest love to be outdoors,” says Visitor Services Manager Jennifer Cutillo.

Named for a prominent environmental and native rights leader from the nearby Nisqually reservation, the Billy Frank Jr. Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge in Washington encompasses a variety of different habitats thanks to its location at the delta of the Nisqually River where it meets the salt water of the Puget Sound.

Situated entirely within the city of New Orleans is the 23,000-acre Bayou Sauvage National Wildlife Refuge, one of the largest of the eight refuges within the Southeast Louisiana National Wildlife Refuges Complex (SELA NWRC), designated by U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service as a priority urban wildlife refuge.
