Corona Ranch Easement Purchase

Sunrise on Corona Ranch

The Florida Governor and Cabinet recently approved a 2500-acre conservation easement purchase over the Corona Ranch in the Everglades Headwaters. The protection of this valuable property has been a priority for the Refuge Association and we are proud to have worked on this conservation purchase under the Florida’s Forest Service Rural and Family Lands Protection Program (RFLPP). The Corona Ranch plays a critical role in our efforts to protect the Lake Okeechobee watershed and drinking water for millions of people in urbanized areas. The ranch contains significant wetlands that are crucial to Kissimmee river restoration efforts and the owners have been voluntarily working to restore the hydrology on site. Florida ranchlands ability to hold and store water is an important and cost-effective tool in our collective Everglades restoration efforts.

The Refuge Association works with multiple agencies to protect critical lands and waters in the Everglades Headwaters. The Everglades Headwaters National Wildlife Refuge is a model of a multi-agency conservation partnership; The state of Florida’s Rural and Family Lands Protection Program and the Florida Forever Program, together with NRCS and United State Fish and Wildlife Service are successfully leveraging funds to protect this critical landscape.
