This Saturday, January 24, is the grand opening of the new visitor center at Pahranagat National Wildlife Refuge in Nevada. National Wildlife Refuge Association’s Western Programs Manager Ron Cole will be in attendance to show our continued support as the organization played a key role in securing funding for the new visitor center.

Funding for this project came from the Southern Nevada Public Lands Management Act (SNPLMA).  Passed in 1998, SNPLMA  allows the Bureau of Land Management to sell public land within an urban boundary surrounding Las Vegas, Nevada. The revenue derived from land sales is split between the State of Nevada General Education Fund, the Southern Nevada Water Authority, and a special account available to state and federal agencies for conservation purposes in Southern Nevada .

In 2007-2008, the Refuge Association worked with Cynthia Martinez, then the Project Leader at the Desert National Wildlife Refuge Complex, and the Desert Complex staff to develop a series of proposals for funding through SNPLMA.  The Pahranagat Visitor Center was funded through one of these proposals.

Southern Nevada has been one of the Refuge Association’s Beyond the Boundaries focus areas since 2007, and we are overjoyed to see projects like the Pahranagat Visitor Center come to fruition. With almost 40,000 visitors each year, and a campsite on the refuge, we are confident this new public resource will get a lot of great use.
